Stand Up Paddle

The Stand Up Paddle is an exciting and fast building event at the State Beach Series.

This is an event that everyone can enjoy regardless of age, ability or size. It is the perfect whole body and core work-out, like walking on water.

Stand Up Paddle improves balance and co-ordination, strength and endurance, is stress reducing and invigorating and invites endurance and exploration.

All entrants receive their personal time which is displayed on the results page.

Start Times

The Stand Up Paddle will start at 6:20PM on the first hooter along with all paddle disciplines. There will be a compulsory race briefing held on the Reserve at 6:15PM

Course Maps

There will be two courses for the Stand Up Paddle at the State Beach Series. These will be chosen by the event director on the night after assessing the weather and ocean conditions. The Paddle course will be patrolled by Mairangi Bay Surf Club.

Courses will not  be explained at the race briefing - course maps will be available on the reserve and will be displayed closer to the start of the season on this webpage.  A State Beach Series volunteer will be available to answer your questions about the course prior to the race briefing.

Race rules and regulations for the paddle events

  1. All paddlers will receive their first high visibility vest free of charge at the first event you take part in - the vest is provide by State Insurance and is compulsory to wear at every State Beach Series event you take part in
  2. 5km Ski Paddlers, SUP, 3km Paddle will start on a first hooter at 6.20pm
  3. All paddlers must start in knee depth water with both feet on the sand
  4. Novice and Stand-Up paddlers must wear a safety leash attached to themselves and their craft. These are available to purchase from Starboard on the reserve.
  5. To ensure a safer departure from Takapuna Beach. We ask all Novice Paddlers to position their craft to the very North end of the beach, Stand–Up Paddlers to right side of them and all Board Paddlers to the right side of them.
  6. We ask all paddlers to be courteous to other beach users and the remaining runners taking part by removing boats and boards from the Beach as soon as possible after they finish.
  7. The race time cut off for all paddle events is 40minutes. After this time you will be asked to board an inflatable rescue craft to be brought ashore.
  8. To qualify for the top 3 in the series your SUP board length must be 12'6” or under. Boards longer than this can still compete in the age group categories.
  9. SUP Board Design – no minimum dimensions or weight restrictions, Twin Hulls (catamaran) are NOT allowed. Foils are not allowed.
